The Honor Roll

Happy Memorial Day.


I am a retired naval officer. The majority of my career was spent in the Navy Medical Corps. I also served during America's longest war. As a result, I was no stranger to the grimmest reminders of the sacrifices required by our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines. I have received casualties at the front, provided care for the injured months and years after their wounds were inflicted, served on notification teams and liaisons for the families of the deceased, and attended too many memorial services. Acknowledging and honoring the service of members of our military, as well as their families, is deeply ingrained in me.

With that in mind, I present our honor roll. The Vokoun family has a long history of service dating to World War I. Here is the roster of family service members that I have thus far accumulated:

Lastly, I am including a letter to the editor of the San Francisco Examiner, it was written by Ella Narcisi Vokoun, the wife of Rudolph W Vokoun Jr. It was published on 9 May 1945, the day after VE Day, 8 May, when Germany surrendered. I will let her poignant words be the final thoughts here.

Rudolph Vokoun - The Ill-fated Cordwainer

 I'll bet you don't know what a cordwainer is. Neither do I, actually. I had to look it up. A cordwainer is someone who makes new shoes using new leather. A cobbler, on the other hand, is someone who repairs shoes. You can thank the British for codifying the difference. Until I wrote this, I had never before considered the possibility of making my own shoes. Alas, the practice is still alive. If inclined you can make yourself a pair through The Cordwainer Shop . Jan Vokoun the family patriarch didn't inherit the family land. So as was apparently the custom in Bohemia, he learned a trade and became a mistr obuvnický, i.e. a master shoemaker. Rudolph was the son who learned his father's trade. Rudolph Vokoun was born  April 17, 1860 to Jan Vokoun and Anne Bechyne. He was the couple's third child after Vaclav and Frantisek (Frank) and the second to survive to adulthood. The Cutters Cut Ties - March 14, 1896

When cutters and trimmers decide to be quitters. Now that I have finished the stories on Frank and Charles, I'm posting a series of articles about the cutter and trimmer strike in the spring of 1896. They highlight the role Bohemians played in the garment industry labor movement. By this time, the Vokouns have been in Chicago for twenty years. Josepha has just died. Jan is probably retired or on the verge. Meanwhile, all of the children are married and/or working. As I have mentioned previously, Frank and Charles operate tailor shops out of their homes. Additionally the oldest grandchild (Frank's son), Frank James, is 18 and working as a cutter but still a few years from marrying Bertha Vanderbiest. His sister, Anna, is 12 years old but will start working as a "factory girl" by 1900, presumably making clothing, and will marry another cutter, James Placek, a four years later. The Holy Roman Empire was neither Holy nor Roman nor an Empire. - Voltaire Golden Seal of Emperor Charles IV So I have covered ancient history and the early middle ages, the next period is regarded as the golden age of Bohemia. It was the age during which this small region became the seat of Europe's largest empire. Prague and Bohemia flourished like never before or since. This was the result of the accomplishments of a man who was half Bohemian through his mother yet favored her heritage over his fathers. Charles IV was arguably the most powerful Czech who ever lived. This is not a European history blog so I am not going to recount the  long, tedious fascinating history of the Holy Roman Empire but I think some background is helpful in order to set the stage for this next chapter in Bohemian history.
